Calvary Celebration

Last night I attended an event in the Anaheim Convention Center called the Calvary Celebration. It was organized by my dad and KWVE 107.9 radio in here in SoCal as a celebration of all that God has done through Pastor Chuck Smith over the years. For the last 18 months my dad and brother have been crisscrossing the globe working on a documentary called RIPTIDE that is examining the effects and impact of the “Jesus Movement” in general and Pastor Chuck’s ministry in specific and at this event a portion of the film was shown. It was a killer night and there was a full house at the venue.

A number of Pastors who were saved during that period spoke and there was music and then Pastor Chuck gave a message looking to the future–which is key–because he isn’t just sitting around remembering the past but pressing on for what is to come because he knows Jesus is still on the move!

The best part was getting to see so many friends who I love and respect–Pedro Garcia, Skip Heitzig, Jon Courson, Mike Macintosh, and Raul Ries to name a few. (In addition to my dad and brother Daniel, who I am super proud of) There was also music by Crystal Lewis, Phil Wickham and others and it was great getting to show Phil how his song, “the time is now” brought our sheep blog vid to life!

And for more info on RIPTIDE click here, you can watch a trailer for the film there on the site–which I recommend you do because it is awesome!!

Levi, I didn’t see you! Last night was so awesome. I was so happy to have been able to be there. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house when it was over – including Chuck’s! I am really looking forward to the release of “Riptide”. The trailer that we got to see has me totally intrigued. Thank you dad and brother for the dedication to this project. Pray for revival!
    God Bless you

  4. My life was and continues to be deeply affected and impacted by the Jesus Movement of the 1970’s (Calvary Chapel with Pastor Chuck Smith and other Calvary Chapel pastors). During the early days of the Jesus Movement, I was a student at Biola University in La Mirada, California….and while I was not directly involved in what was taking place in those early days, without a doubt the Holy Spirit was touching my life with the love of Christ and setting my heart afire with His Word (and with an intense desire for the ministry of the gospel of the Kingdom of God, both in its declaration and demonstration), with an impact that would be more completely felt some years later. I can remember those early days when Pastor Ray Stedman taught us from Second Corinthians chapter 3 on “Authentic Christianity”…and how he would tell us in his quiet and yet so impacting way that “Jesus died for us in order that He might live His powerfully resurrected life in and through us…” That message would follow after me and has to this present day. And this continues to be the message of true biblical Christianity…and I am so thankful for those pastors and Bible-teachers who have been continually faithful in the ministry of the Word by the empowering of the Holy Spirit, teaching us and ministering to us concerning the full abundance of that work of God’s Spirit in and through our lives. I began attending Biola University in the fall of 1969, just when the Jesus Movement was getting started at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa…and the Lord was doing such a beautiful work of His Spirit there in those early days. I completely missed those early days of the Jesus Movement because of some narrow (and somewhat bigoted) theological perspectives which I held to in those early days. Fact of the matter, however, the Lord by His Spirit had His hand upon my life even then….and the impact of the Jesus Movement would come upon me like a flood some years later, and my life today is richly blessed. Today I am 59 years of age…and looking back on those early days is a blessing. What i am finding that I need to remember is that the flow of the Holy Spirit in and through our lives in the present will keep this movement from becoming a monument. “Remembering the past…inspiring the future…” And in reality, the Jesus Movement began in Acts chapter 2…and is still going on today…to the glory and praise of God
