Say Cheese!

This weekend, I told the crowd at Rock the River to smile so I could get a shot of them for my twitter from the stage. The picture turned out pretty cool. It’s a sea of faces. Even pinching and zooming around it on my phone’s screen I can’t even begin to process all the different people. Beyond the first thousand, they become too blurry to make out in any detail.

As I was looking at it this morning a verse came to my mind, Matthew 10:29-31 Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Looking at this picture through the grid of Jesus’ statement is mindblowing. To think, Jesus doesn’t see a crowd, He sees the individuals.

He knows how many hairs, if any, are on their heads. He knows their names. He knows which ones feel lonely, which ones have AIDS, which ones wonder if there is a God and those that have thought about killing themselves. He could tell you what everyone in the picture had for breakfast and tell who has been starving themself to look thinner. In Psalm 103 David let’s us know that God knows our sitting down and our rising up and that there is no where we can go to get away from His presence.

As awesome as that is to think about, God’s information isn’t the the only impressive thing to think about. He’s not just a glorified version of Google who also keeps tabs on our every email, web search and chat session. (for the eventual purpose of global domination I am sure.) He not only knows us, but He loves us. Oh, How He loves us!

Epheaians 3:18-19 puts it this way, And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

He loves everyone in the picture, and not just in word only. He proved it by dying on the cross to pay for their sins. He knows which of them have accepted His free gift of eternal life and is still knocking on the hearts of those who haven’t. Even though He knows who will ultimately reject Him, until their dying breath He gives them opportunities to be saved. This love is especially amazing when you keep in mind His perfect knowledge of every second of our lives. That humbles me in a pretty major way.

This picture is worth a lot more than a thousand words because it speaks of thoughts more in number than the sand of the seashore that God thinks about every single person in the shot. And just as God’s eye is on the sparrow, His eye is on you too, so say cheese!
