England and Hungary :: Skull Church

It was an absolute dream come true to be able to travel to Europe to preach the Gospel earlier this summer. We have seen people from other countries come to know Jesus through our ministry over the years after watching live webcasts or listening to an episode of our podcast; but being able to put on evangelistic events on foreign soil was an absolute thrill and honor.

Skull Church has been a platform to preach the Gospel since the first event took place in 2009. The bloody death of Jesus Christ and His power over death is what it is all about. Later this fall we will be going on a tour that will take us through several states but up until this point, with one exception, we haven’t really gone outside of Montana. So to go to England and Hungary was a major step of faith and a joy.

Preaching in the beautiful city of Budapest was something I was a little stressed about, since preaching through a translator is something I have only done on a few occasions and Hungarian is one of the most difficult languages on earth. The upside is that you have the time to gather your thoughts while they are translating but you are constantly having to rethink whether humor will come across and if a phrase has an equivalent in their paradigm. It ended up going well.

England was of course much easier as they sort of own English. To the British we are the ones with an accent, and are seen as having butchered their language. No translation was needed and I had a blast ministering there. It was absolutely wonderful to hear people calling on the name of Jesus in Hungarian and with a British accent. It gave me chills. The gospel is powerful no matter what nation you are in. Jesus is the only name that can save in any language.

In addition the the Skull Church events I also preached at a pastor’s conference with leaders who had assembled from all over England, Scotland and Ireland. It was a massive honor to address them and encourage them to keep going and not grow weary. We also were able to bring a little fresh life to York as we took over the weekend services at my friend Pastor Dave Sylvester’s church on a Sunday morning. It was a great pleasure for me to see our team serve so faithfully, through the jetlag. Some of them had never left the country before and I love the opportunities that God opens up for us as we follow Him. Never a dull moment.

I truly believe that this was just the tip of the spear as it comes to the international future God has in store for Skull Church, and specifically in Europe. Now that we have done it once we have learned our footing a bit, and made some mistakes on the way. I am hungry to do it again and to see what the Lord will do.

Skull Church goes to Europe

pastor_euro

This year marks the fifth anniversary since Skull Church was born. The first one took place in Kalispell, Montana in 2009. We have seen God use these explicitly evangelistic events in many places and great ways since then. This summer we are so excited to be taking it out of the country for the first time as we go to Europe! On June 28 and 29 we will be having two nights in York, England and on July 1 we will be in Budapest, Hungary.

We are thrilled at the opportunity to preach the gospel to those who will come and believing God will use these events in a major way. Please join with us in prayer!

Details about the events and our fall tour here.

It Takes an Army

army-1

When I think back to this past weekend what comes to mind is Nehemiah 4:6 “So we built the wall. And all the wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.” When people are united in vision towards a common goal and energized by God’s Holy Spirit there is no limit to what can be achieved. Easter weekend 2014 at Fresh Life is living proof of that to me!

In the history of our church we have never pulled off a larger, more intense, or more complicated event than this. Since opening our 6th campus in Bozeman 6 weeks ago we now have a lot of moving pieces: musicians and manpower all over Montana, rented venues in 3 cities, more complicated than normal streaming demands and in Kalispell we are in the largest facility in town, a rodeo arena to convert into a church. And lemme tell you, it takes an army!

And that’s exactly what we have. An army. A ton of fully caffeinated, dedicated and passionate, microphone rocking fresh lifers who have a mind to work. Filled with the Spirit and in one accord. It is staggering to watch God bless our unity by causing the oil to flow as our sails and souls are filled. Best of all, as we let down our nets at skull church and fresh life Easter we saw people respond to Jesus all across the state!

Skull Church Helena Recap

We had our final Skull Church event of the year this month. It was also my first time preaching in the state capital. It was amazing to watch God move in so many people’s lives. There is a real spiritual hunger in Helena and I can’t wait to go back!

This weekend’s party

Skull Church Helena

In 1864 a group of prospectors known as the Four Georgians discovered gold while mining in what is now the capital of Montana. They were at the tail end of an unsuccessful expedition and if they didn’t find gold here they were going to give up and go back home. They hit pay dirt. Gold. News of their success spread and soon others began to flock to the area. The spot was named the “Last Chance Gulch.” The the city of Helena was born.

Evangelism is kind of like mining. You turn over shovel full after shovel full of earth but there is no guarantee as to what you are going to find or if you are going to have any success at all. Both take effort and diligence on your part, but at the end of the day you are dealing with many factors that are outside your control. Only God can make diamonds, precious stones and gold and He is the only one who can save a soul. You can tell people about what Jesus has done for them, but they might not care or respond to His gracious invitation.

To me, the unpredictability of it all is what is what makes it exciting. Stepping out in faith, taking risks and launching out into the deep are all essential parts of following Jesus and being His ambassadors. Where everything is certain and known and tame there is no need to trust God. We came to Helena for Skull Church, like the Four Georgians did, on a hunch. We believed God wanted to do something incredible. Like their fateful trip — we experienced a spiritual bonanza! There were 312 people that responded to the gospel in person and another 18 registered decisions online!

We have been doing these events for years now and have seen the Lord bless our faith and His Word again and again. I still find it is as thrilling as it was the first time to watch the nets come out of the water full of fish (I’m mixing metaphors now I know, sorry). I pray that the Lord would never let me get used to this. Our team is full of legends, our church is wide awake, our God is for us and it is the honor of a lifetime to be a part of any of this.

Before this weekend I had never spent any time in the city of Helena but I thoroughly enjoyed it and can’t wait to return. Family Force 5 and Britt Nicole were an absolute pleasure to partner with. This was the third time we have had Family Force out to Skull Church events but we had never partnered with Britt before and she was solid gold (pun intended.)

With this event Skull Church comes to a close for 2013. It has been an amazing year of events and extraordinarily difficult too. These events have been funded, in part, by donations that were made in Lenya’s honor and so we have shown footage telling her story at every event. Getting into a frame of mind where I can preach after watching the video is hard, but good. I rejoice in the connection to heaven as God continues to use her life to draw people to Himself.

Skull Church Helena

We are on our way to Helena for the final Skull Church event of the year! This has been an amazing year for Skull Church. We have had events in Kalispell, Missoula, Albuquerque (our first event outside the state) and we are finishing it off at the capitol of Montana. Two thousand years ago Jesus was hung to die for the sins of the world at Golgotha, the place of the skull, and the power of what He did that day is still the only way men can be saved. We began doing Skull Church events in 2009 to communicate this message and I have never in my life been more committed to preaching the gospel.

DID YOU KNOW? Both Saturday and Sunday night’s events will be streamed live at skullchurch.com at 7pm Mountain Time. You can watch on your mobile device or computer or by downloading the Fresh Life app. If you know someone who needs Jesus, invite them to watch the webcast with you or send them a link. I am excited about my messages for both evenings, but Sunday night I am going to specifically be talking about death, loss and hope, which functions as an anchor for the soul. If there is someone in your life who has experienced tragedy and needs hope let them know to tune in.
