  1. We are once flooded twice shy. This is the system I’m looking at installing to detect anomalies in water, flow, and usage. For example, if we are out of town and it detects a large volume of water, it will automatically shut off the water main in our home and send an alert to my phone. Pretty cool! (If you missed it, our home flooded last week.)

  2. Let's start with the premise that you need to start a fire, but one of your arms or hands has been injured. Now that I have your attention, let me tell you that there is a fire-starting solution that will work up to 4,000 times and even work wet. I realize this hypothetical scenario is a bit out there…but it's better to have and not need than need and not have, as far as I'm concerned.

  3. Keeping with the theme of emergencies, I love this little triage kit. It’s first aid plus a little more. It includes zip ties, duct tape, an emergency blanket, and a few other things. Plus, the form factor and waterproof packaging are amazing. I almost always toss one in my bag, no matter what I am doing–hiking, fishing, traveling, etc. It has come in handy more times than I can count!

  4. Ok, one more adventure accessory! This little guy is very well named. Rocky Talkie is sublime. I think with ski season approaching, this is a must-have. I love the fact that it is rugged, can handle extreme cold, has a battery for days, and has a little carabiner built right into it.

  5.  This was one of the most enjoyable books I have read in a hot minute. It has me itching to get back to the Grand Canyon. (And it makes me grateful for all the survival gear I have bought.)
